Type Worship

Date: 4/20

Critical Response: I found this IG page while searching my feed for Typography inspiration and I absolutely love this picture. The grouping of marriage/mother and child/families is communicated so well in these designs. Typography has the power to communicate powerful messages visually, only through the text; the designs are images within themselves.

Matter Matters

Date: 4/20

Critical Response: “Matter” is a NYC-based gallery for contemporary design. The founder, Jamie Gray, created the brand Matter-Made which helps represent manufacturers and independent designers working today.
I love the creativity within this site. From lighting fixtures to table tops and seating arrangements, innovative is an understatement.

Periodic Table of Typefaces

Date: 4/20

Critical Response: I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this one, but “The periodic table of typefaces” is hilarious. (Have you seen this before?) I’m not familiar with that many typefaces yet, but I have recognized a few of the basics such as Univers, Rockwell, Sans, Gothic, and Helvetica, of course. I appreciate how the table is organized, indicating in what context the fonts should be used.

Coasters

Date: 4/20

Critical Response: I work in at a restaurant & we get new coasters depending on the different brands of alcohol we receive from time to time. The new square one caught my eye at first because of the different typefaces that are used. The fact that “Sam” is written in the same font as Samuel Adams makes a big impact for referencing the beer. I also liked the way Charlotte was written on the circular coaster. It is playful, yet bold. It’s interesting to see how typefaces communicate different messages and emotions.

Laser-Cut Wood

Date: 4/13/15

Critical Response: Sandra Fettingis is an artist who creates sculptures out of wood and styrene. Her laser-cut designs are intricate, abstracted geometric patterns! I have worked in UNCC’s woodshop before for my 3D design class before so I know how hard it is to create art such as this. It is incredible how precisely Sandra can cut the wood.

Well-Designed Résumé

Date: 4/13/15

Critical Response: The information on a job resume is important of course, but what some people don’t consider is the design of the actual resume! Just the visual appearance makes an important impact for interviewers and hiring managers. The examples for layout design on this website provide some great suggestions, and I especially find it relevant after the zine project Rachel and I worked on.
